PROJECT 1

For this project initially,  I had a few ideas to how I wanted to manipulate my photo. Here are my sketches:
Fig.1.1: Sketches and ideas

Initially, I went with the toilet brush and the mascara. When I showed Mr. Martin my idea, he said that it could be stronger. So I suggested having a closeup photo of a girl's eyes and a hand holding the toilet brush mascara, so it makes it look more "in the face". I couldn't find pictures of toilet brush online thus I decided to change it up to a caterpillar. I attempted this idea in photoshop and here is how it looks like.

Fig.1.2: First mock-up

This was just a mock-up as I just wanted to see how my idea fits together in a piece. In the end, I decided to not continue with this idea.

Further on, I brainstorm more ideas, sketched all of them out.

After feedback and advice from Mr Jeffrey and Mr Martin, they told me that I should choose the idea that I liked best and work on it passionately. Later, I went with my idea of real fruits in candies. This idea conveys a message that nowadays candies and sweets become so artificial and harmful to one's health. I want viewers to imagine a world that we can actually have real fruits as sweets. How amazing that can be?

During the execution of this idea, I realized that I couldn't actually produce the photo of the candy wrappers. I tried looking for stores that sell them but to no avail. Hence, I came up with a new idea.

As I was walking out from design principles class, I was casually looking at the fire hose reel and thought that there was something that can be done with it. Then it hit me. I thought of having a tomato as the fire reel and tomato ketchup coming out from the hose.

To start off, I used the content aware fill to remove the fire extinguisher from the background picture. Then, I masked out the fire hose nozzle from the stock photo and matched the colour to the original hose by adjusting the hue and saturation and I added shadows. Next, I fitted the tomato onto the reel and adjusted all the details. I added the sauce underneath the fire hose nozzle and lastly the three ketchup bottles. To achieve a realistic outcome, I played with shadows, smudge tool, dodge tool, blur tool blending modes etc.

Here is my overall progress:

For project 2B, we were required to animate our still photo on After Effects. I was thinking of rotating the tomato and making the ketchup sauce drizzle down in slow motion. Firstly, I animated the tomato using the rotate tool. Next, I animated the ketchup sauce using the puppet pin tool and I've added some effects into the transformation.

Here is the final outcome of the animation:
