REFLECTION
Experiences
Time flies now that I have completed two typography modules. In this advanced typography module, there weren't as many lectures compared to semester 1. However, most of the lectures were conducted by us. I noticed that this semester was more for us to learn independently as we had to apply what we've learned in semester 1 into this semester and the specific feedback from our lecturers were also given moderately.
For me personally, this module had been truly experimental. I learned how to rely on myself more and to think critically on how to solve certain problems. There were loads of exploration and more tedious attempts made. As usual, there were rough times and sleepless nights throughout this module, it was definitely more challenging and mentally draining to me. I have made more attempts in my process and experienced more disappointments this semester. However, the process made me improve and learn from it. One thing I cannot deny is the intrinsic value that I've accumulated since day one was much more rewarding and satisfying.
Observations
Throughout this module, a lot of my classmates have improved and produced many good works. It was always interesting to see what they have come up with, their crazy ideas which really did inspire me as a creative. I was able to understand most of everyone's personal style as it is seemingly evident in some of their works. On the other hand, I realized that with the knowledge learned from the previous semester, it has helped me to view type in a different perspective. I am getting more familiar with type as now I am able to distinguish the fonts and identify daily typographical errors in life.
Findings
I learned that I don't always have to rely on myself when it comes to developing an idea. What I found really helpful was to initiate a discussion with someone. It doesn't always have to be intentional but even in the smallest things you talked about, an idea can be sparked. It worked for me as discussing ideas with someone can inspire you or spark something in you. Not only that but by paying attention to every detail and action of something, it leads to something that you can never think of, which is pretty amazing. Besides, I personally would like to commit to pursue more further reading during my free time as it would enhance my knowledge and design thinking.
Overall, this module has helped me to understand myself a little better than before, to realize what I'm lacking and to work towards that. It is still my favourite module amongst the others and I would also like to take this platform to express my gratitude to both of my lovely lecturers, Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul. Although I may appear shy and quiet, but I really appreciate both of you for guiding and wanting us to become better designers.
