LECTURE NOTES

Lecture 5: Typographic Perception & Organization
23/9/19 (Week 5)

A group presented about Typographic Perception & Organization. Firstly, it talks about the contrast of type in terms of size, weight, form, structure, texture, color, and direction. The second subtopic talks about form. Next, gestalt psychology and layout was explained. We were also taught how to create layout in design. In addition, we can create visual hierarchy by playing with size, typographic, colour and tint, space and texture. Lastly, composition can be applied such as the rule of thirds and leading lines.

Lecture 6: Typographic Perception & Organization
30/9/19 (Week 6)

This week our group presented about typographic composition. Environmental composition serves as metaphorical purposes and visually represent the text in a way that goes beyond page composition. Environmental grids is a series of lines and shapes from physical site to be used as a grid, and using the underlying structure in the image to guide placement for typography. Next, alternate methods offer compositional options beyond traditional grids. Elements depend on another to decide the location and to attain compositional balance. For instance, if one letterform, word, or line shifts position, others follow.

Lecture 7: Typography in Different Mediums
7/10/19 (Week 7)

This week's group presented on typographic in different mediums. They talked about static typography, print typography, screen typography and print vs screen. Secondly,  we were introduced about kinetic typography. There are few types, for example motion typography and fluid typography. Next, they explained about environmental typography then moved on to virtual and augmented reality.

INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 1

For my first composition, I wanted to showcase teenagers being troublemakers.

In this second idea, I was inspired by the punk rock style and aesthetic, plus having the idea of anarchism in my head as I execute this artwork.

This third artwork showcases a woman with a butterfly covering her eyes. This idea talks about designers who want to see change so badly that they finally come out from their shells (hole) to "speak up". The butterfly symbolizes transformation and freedom. Also, you can see the word 'RULES' in the middle, which signifies designers going against the rules to bring about a change in society.

My final artwork focuses on type only and I played with the text and words, making it a key artwork itself. The red lines represent troublemakers spraying paint over it. Initially, I added a square outline and an eclipse into the composition. However, after getting feedback from the people around me, I decided to remove it and put the main focus on the words only.

FEEDBACK

Week 5
General Feedback: Mr. Vinod mentioned that once we start refining our letterforms from the ones we have extracted, we need to find a core characteristic to appear in all the letters. The process of refining only involves us adding or subtracting certain elements we want and to inject them in all the other letters.

Specific Feedback: Mr. Vinod said that my AEX looks thicker than the other letters. He told me to decide which stroke to be thin and the other to be thick.

Online Feedback: Please refer to an actual typeface to know which stroke is supposed to be thick and thin. The E’s stem stroke is supposed to be thick and not its arms! On e you have don’t that then make the strokes thinner and ticker. Your stroke contrast needs to be more thick and thin. Increase thickness and thinness. All the above is feedback please copy-paste it in RED in the Google Excel sheet. Also, record it on your Eportfolio. The distance below and above the X is not the same, you can make the below the same as the above or slightly wider. Other than that it’s looking nicer, I think.

Week 6
General Feedback: Mr. Vinod told us to not use lightbulbs in our designs because this standard can be found anywhere. Mr. Vinod emphasized that to come up with a good idea, we had to come up with several ideas and to not follow the same path all the time. Instead, we have to use a new approach and perspective to it. He also mentioned that if our understanding is wrong, the idea is wrong. Ideas development can be done in many ways such as mindmaps, conversations or synonyms.

Specific Feedback: The typeface is already doing the job, there's no need for the punk. You can make a visual with just the type. The stencil of the type represents the message it brings. He suggested that I could probably incorporate more symbolic elements or design fundamental elements.

Online Feedback: Interesting visual. Try a few more variations ... you might end up with a few more ideas. Typo placement needs work. Don’t get overly influences by previous students' work. Think about the typo systems and also the last lecture with regard to experimental grids.

Week 7
General Feedback: Mr. Vinod told us to create an outline around the artboards for our typographic systems. We have to ensure every embedded pdf is made visible to the public. For our finding type exercise, we have to make sure our refinery processes and the final outcome has to be placed on a baseline. For our lectures, we have to summarize the lectures.

Specific Feedback: After showing Mr. Vinod a few ideas that I had, he preferred the last one. He said that instead of simply putting random words, use proper words, troublemaking words related to design. He told me to make the artwork straight as a rectangle without the eclipses. He also suggested that I can incorporate some malaysian elements in it. Lastly, he added an invert layer to my artwork and told me to see it in a different light.
Please upload lectures and summarise.

REFLECTION

Experiences

Week 5: This week has been pretty hectic for me, my letterforms refinery wasn't there yet and my type and image was still stagnant, waiting for me to do more. This week, we were also introduced to project 1 in which we had to come up with ten ideas then come up with three digitized output. With three assignments now on my plate, I had to do something about it and learn how to manage my time.

Week 6: I struggled at coming up with ideas for the troublemakers manifesto. I tried digitizing a few of them and still feel like it isn't there yet. I'm also still struggling with my type and image when most people have finished it.

Week 7: After receiving my feedback from Mr. Vinod, I explored more variations around the idea. I still maintained the typeface I used for most of my attempts which has a spray paint effect. I find the style fitting for my ideas behind the troublemakers manifesto.

Observations

Week 5: I observed that a lot of people were still stuck with the first and second exercise.

Week 6: I noticed a lot of people were still struggling with the execution of their trouble manifesto ideas and a lot of them used skulls in their design.

Week 7: A lot of my classmates were struggling in class. I noticed that they have already had a few attempts made on the key artwork yet approval was yet to be received.

Findings

Week 5: I realized that using a typeface as a reference to refining the letterforms made things much clearer. I finally had a direction and idea of adjusting my strokes to which stroke should be thicker or thinner.

Week 6: I found Mr. Vinod's sharing very enlightening and heartwarming as he gave his personal story on his experience of the process of his idea development.

Week 7: I found that by experimenting and branching out with new ideas help a lot in the process of developing the key artwork. I got to have a variety of compositions that are clearly better than my first few attempts. My understanding of the purpose and ideas were also clearer. At last, I am pretty satisfied with the outcome I had in the end and it was worth the attempts made for it to happen.

FURTHER READING

Week 5 - Week 6
23/9/19 - 30/9/19

1. Lettering & Type by Bruce Willen & Nolen Strals

This book has shown me a lot of how-tos, histories of type, clear diagrams and exercises. This book features a foreword written by the author of a book that I read for the past further reading. It's nice to see that typographers and authors are all connected with each other.

From this book, I learned that writing, lettering, and type represent three distinct methods of creating letters. Writing emphasizes quick communication and execution above appearance. Lettered characters are constructed through multiple actions and may involve several tools or processes. Lettering or written characters that can be reproduced and rearranged become type. Type unites the detail and formality of lettering with the speed and ease of handwriting. The ability to create and reproduce pre-existing characters through a single action differentiates type from writing and lettering.
