7/10/19 (Week 7)

This week's group presented on typographic in different mediums. They talked about static typography, print typography, screen typography and print vs screen. Secondly,  we were introduced about kinetic typography. There are few types, for example motion typography and fluid typography. Next, they explained about environmental typography then moved on to virtual and augmented reality.

Lecture 8: -

We didn't have lecture today as we focused on finalizing our key artwork and collaterals.

Lecture 9: -
21/10/19 (Week 9)

We didn't have a lecture today as Mr. Vinod briefed us about our final project.

INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 2

This project is a continuation of project 1 and we are required to create 4 collaterals, a poster, a microsite (which is done in the interactive design module) and two other collaterals such as a t-shirt, tote bag or phone case which is entirely up to us.

#1 Poster

For the poster, the information needed is as below:

Taylor’s University

Open Public Lectures:

November 8, 2019

Ezrena Mohd., 10AM-11AM
Suzy Sulaiman, 11AM-12PM
Muthu Neduraman, 1PM–2PM
Fahmi Reza, 2PM-3PM
Fahmi Fadzil, 3PM-4PM

Lecture Theatre 12

After getting my key artwork approved, I began working on my poster. I explored different variations with the placement of text and tried different typefaces. I accidentally did my posters in A3 when it's supposed to be in A2. Below is my process.

After showing all my attempts to Mr. Vinod, he approved of my last attempt but I was told to rework my poster on A2. I chose the typeface Monument Extended for my poster.

I changed the main details point size from 21pt to 18pt and the body point size from 18pt to 14pt. After reworking my poster on A2, here is my final outcome.

#2 Tote Bag

I downloaded a mockup of a totebag online and attached my key artwork in photoshop.

I explored different variations for my tote bag designs. Below are my attempts.

Mr. Vinod approved of my tote bags and said it looks nice. Therefore, I picked the one that I liked best as below.

#3 T-Shirt

Next, I proceeded to download a front and back mockup of the t-shirt then edited them in photoshop. Again, I attempted several designs to it, having different colours as well. Below is my process.

Here are the several designs I attempted.

Mr. Vinod told me to choose the white shirt and I decided to go with this design.

#4 Microsite

We did our microsite in our interactive design module as well. Here is the link:

FEEDBACK

Week 8
General Feedback: Mr. Vinod emphasized that it is crucial to work on our documents in the right size because if it's in A2 don't do it in A3 because it will enlarge the font size if you try to expand it, and as for our point size we need to make it between 14-18 points. He also said that in advertising, the idea is wittier, more pronounced, while in graphic design, the idea meshes with the design. Mr. Vinod told us to ensure our e-portfolios are updated and every process is recorded. Our reflections should also be properly written.

Specific Feedback: For my poster, Mr. Vinod said that it is interesting but I should have worked my document in the right size. For my collaterals, he said they are looking really nice. Good job.

Week 9
General Feedback: Mr.Vinod said that we can photo manipulate our key artwork, but when it comes to positioning, it cannot be in photoshop. He also reminded us to ensure that when we are breaking the key artwork, the audience should understand that it is about the design colloquium even when they are only seeing the collaterals only. Mr. Vinod also asked us to print our posters on A3 too to make sure everything is in the right positioning and size.

Specific Feedback: Okay you're done, good job.

REFLECTION

Experiences

Week 8: I honestly had fun this week designing the collaterals. Trying different variations was always exciting for me. It is really satisfying seeing your designs implemented in different products.

Week 9: After getting my work approved by Mr. Vinod, I had a hard time printing the poster. I attempted to print for more than ten times but only one time I succeeded.

Observations

Week 8: It was really eye-opening to see the different collaterals made by other students. They had different approaches and diff types of collaterals to work with which was really interesting.

Week 9: I noticed some of the students struggled printing like me while some got it right in their first try. Though having difficulties in the process of printing the draft A3 poster out, I still felt relieved to have my work approved.

Findings

Week 8: I learned to appreciate simple designs more as I tend to have the urge to add more things into the composition making it more complicated. I kept my design simple and minimal, thus, it was easier to work with.

Week 9: I realized that I should embed my picture in Illustrator before saving it as a PDF, because my key artwork was missing while it got printed out.

Type Team: Perfect Typeface Combinations by Tony Seddan

What I like about this book is that it is the ultimate target for any designers to learn about deeper knowledge of type and combining it with individual typefaces from all classifications and styles for any category or creative project. It contains 150 typeface combinations grouped into 25 contrasting categories, ranging from Classical and Scholarly to Edgy and Vibrant, and with a full page devoted to each entry. Besides that, I've also learned a lot of new and interesting facts about texts and grids.
