Lecture 1: Vormator Challenge
4/4/19 (Week 1)

During our first week of class, Mr Hafiz began with a brief introduction about the module and introduced us to Adobe Illustrator which is a software that we will be using alot for this module. Then, we started on our first exercise which is the Vormator Challenge. We were guided by Mr Hafiz on how to trace the Vormator shapes. We learnt how to use the pen tool to trace each of the 8 shapes. After that, we were assigned to create a character using only the 8 shapes given with specific rules as below.

  • No distortion of shapes
  • Only 3 colours can be used
  • Rotating, flipping and scaling proportionally is allowed

Lecture 2: Shapes & Shadows in 2B Forms
11/4/19 (Week 2)

For this week's class, Mr. Redzwan taught us how to draw shapes from different perspectives. We were then told to draw out objects around us such as the computer mouse, our bottles, phone etc. Then, he proceeded to teach us about shadow rendering. He taught us how to understand shadows on objects under different directions of light source. We drew the shadows using the 3 cool grey markers we were told to buy. From this lecture, I learnt how to draw objects from different perspectives and their shadows.

Our first exercise was to render the shadows on these two figures as below.

Lecture 3: Digital Light & Shadow
18/4/19 (Week 3)

Mr Hafiz taught us how to create shadows using Adobe Illustrator and to apply the skillset in our Vormator character.

Lecture 4: Drawing Facial Expressions
25/4/19 (Week 4)

Mr. Redzwan taught us how to draw strokes and to apply them in doodles of facial expressions. We started by drawing a draft using a grey marker, then using Artline 0.6 black pen to draw the outline and details. Stroke technique is applied to differentiate the thick and thin lines in the drawing.

Lecture 5: Lines as Shapes
9/5/19 (Week 6)

Mr. Hafiz guided us on how to create our own custom brushes. We found pictures of paint splatter online, then using it to create our brushes in Adobe Illustrator.

Lecture 6: Drawing Lines
17/5/19 (Week 7)

Mr Redwzan guided us on how to draw lines from different directions, perspectives, strokes and techniques.

We were to also create 6 different styles of pears.

We were told to find a blockbuster movie and break it down according to the 5 acts of narrative structures.

5 Narrative Elements

Fig.6.5: Example of 5 narrative structures

1.   Exposition
After the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss and Peeta return home to District 12.  When they return they expect things to be peaceful, but while at the Mayor's daughter Madge's house Katniss see's that their has been an uprising in one of the districts.  Katniss is soon visited by President Snow who claims that the berry incident from the last games has caused rebellion. He blames Katniss and thinks that she was trying to start an uprising. Katniss states how she only was going to eat the berries out of love but President Snow does not believe her.  He said that she must convince the rest of the district of her and Peeta's love, so that they would calm down, or there would be consequences.

2.   Rising action
It was announced that all former winners of the games were going to be put back into the drawing for the Quarter Quell.  Katniss, Peeta, and Haymitch are the only victors from district 12 and when entered, Katniss and Haymitch's names were drawn. Peeta then volunteers for Haymitch so that he can go into the games with Katniss.  All tributes were then sent to the training arena so that they could get ready for the games.  Wiress and Beetee point out that there is a force field around the Game-makers and that you could tell by a flaw in the field.  Katniss and Peeta go into the games and are quickly allies with Finnick, Johanna, Mags, Wiress and Beetee.  Wiress figures out that the arena is in the shape of a clock and that a different hour is a different disaster.  Wiress and Mags died but the rest survived.

3.   Climax
In the arena, Katniss helps bring down the force field after realizing there is some sort of plot in motion by the other tributes involving her and Peeta. This is a breakthrough for the rebels.

4.   Falling action
After she shoots through the force field the arena explodes and Katniss is injured.  She is picked up by the District 13 hovercraft with Finnick and Beetee.  She figures out that Plutarch Heavensbee was behind the rebellion the whole time and that mockingjay was used as a symbol of rebellion.  So also learns that there is a District 13 and that they were going to fight the Capitol.  When she asked were Peeta was she was told that him, Johanna, and Enobaria were captured by the Capitol. She is angered that Haymitch did not save him and lashes out towards him.

5.   Resolution
They were unable to rescue Peeta and Johanna, and they are captives in the Capitol. Katniss is sedated after attacking Haymitch for not keeping his promise to protect Peeta. She later awakens to find Gale by her side. He assures her that her family is safe, but that District 12 has been destroyed after Snow was made aware of the rebels' plot.
