REFLECTION
Experience
My first impression of this module was that Typography is easy and that it would be the most laid-back class amongst the others. I literally thought we would learn about calligraphy and brush lettering techniques in this class. Turns out, I was so wrong. Despite being the most difficult module in my opinion, Typography has become my favourite module in this first semester. The reason why it was so difficult for me is that there have been many times I felt so lost and was somehow always one of the slowest in understanding the assignments. It has made me sleep deprived to the core just to perfect every assignment and to update weekly tasks in our e-portfolio. There were times when I doubted myself as a designer as well. Nonetheless, the experience throughout this module was a good rollercoaster ride. To be able to witness our work come to life was the greatest achievement and joy in the midst of our sleepless nights and endless attempts. To also be able to learn in such environment where the class is huge and our lecturers were able to spend time looking at each of our works, giving feedback to improve and grow from it, was absolutely amazing.
Observation
I still recall the first day of class where the lecturers said that this class will change us. They were right. This class has changed me, for the better. It has became a subconscious habit of mine where I will start analyzing and judge the designs around me. I will start analyzing the typeface used, letterspacing, overall layout and composition settings, the level of readability and legibility. It's crazy how one module in just a semester can change your mindset and the way you look at design today. Typography is so much more than just text and I am eager to learn many more things about it. I have come to appreciate Typography and the thought process that goes behind every decision made in the design.
Findings
The one thing that is crucial for this module is to be diligent. To be diligent in every process of the assignment, to make countless attempts, to gain feedback and to update our e-portfolios. This module has certainly taught me that. However, one thing about maintaining the e-portfolio frustrates me. The unnecessary amount of time I spent at ensuring each post looked perfect was crazy. Blogger feels very glitchy to me as the site loves to mess with the size and spacing of my text and it always takes forever to amend it. I hope to see some improvements in the management of our e-portfolios in the future. Besides, I may not be good in typography yet, but I reckon that I will do my best to be there in the future. I still have loads to learn and so much more room for improvement. I initially thought that I would get upset with every negative feedback given, instead I happened to feel more calm and at ease than I thought I would. Hence, I am genuinely grateful for all the constructive criticisms and feedback received from Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul as they played a big part in helping me improve and grow.
