LECTURE NOTES
Lecture 1: Briefing
30/8/19 (Week 1)
For the first class, Ms. Yati and Ms. Jinchi briefed us on the module and what to expect for the upcoming weeks in this module. In summary, we will be conducting a research on our chosen topic, in which work will be done consistently leading up to the final week. This research will be a continuation for us during our specialization and we were encouraged to pick a topic related to our specialization.

Lecture 2: Proposal
6/9/19 (Week 2)
This week we learned about problem statement, research objective and research question, which is needed in the proposal of our research. Ms. Jinchi taught us how to write a problem statement, which includes 3 parts - ideal, reality and consequence.

Proposal
30/8/2019 - 20/9/2019
(Week 1-Week 4)
Week 1
We were required to choose a topic that is interesting to us and relates to our specialization. Then, we had a consultation with Dr. Yati and Dr. Jinchi about our chosen topics. For the first week, I brainstormed a lot of ideas. However, most of my ideas weren't that applicable and relevant to my specialization. I talked about how people nowadays visit art exhibition as if it is a selfie museum and are they enjoying the experience of enjoying art or truly enjoying the masterpiece.
Feedback: Dr. Jinchi found my topic interesting. However, it is more suited for new media. Thus, I had to go back and do some thinking about it. She suggested that I can still work on that idea but I can try relating it or change the perspective to suit graphic design more.
Week 2
I decided to change my topic to the study of consumers response on logo design. After my consultation with Dr. Jinchi, the initial proposed idea had turned into something even more interesting, which is how visual elements in graphic design play an important role in determining/reflecting a brand.
Feedback: Define what is consumer response. Find out what are the ways of aspects of a brand can reflect its identity. Focus more on graphic design visual elements. The core is how can visual elements in graphic design play an important role to determine/reflect the brand.
Week 3
Feedback: Dr. Jinchi told me to work on paraphrasing and citing my problem statement. She suggested that in my problem statement I can add in one or two brand's success stories of how visual elements boosted their brand identity. She helped revised my research questions and objectives. If I were to look into skincare brands, I can look into high-end approach vs a playful approach like The Body Shop and Bath & Body Works or Kens Apothecary and Kiehls. She also recommended that I can also look into telecommunication brands such as Digi. In terms of visual elements, I can look into the website, the ease of the navigation, the layout as well as their store display, to look into their physical store layout. If I were to do a comparison two brands, I should have them in the same genre or else I would only discuss about them individually. Overall, Dr. Jinchi said that my progress was not bad.
First research proposal:
Proposal feedback:
• Research Theme: Matches research problem
• Research Topic, Research Problem: Related
• Research Problem: Rephrase to omit the word “How”
• Problem Statement: First paragraph, why did you write “individualism”? Does it have anything to do with bombardment of advertisements? Provide some examples of these kind of brand exposure. Relate third paragraph to the first. What is the source of your claim about Airbnb’s changes? Bring more clarity to the final paragraph – in your Research Objective and Research Question, you mentioned studying brands of skincare products. Make that clear in the final paragraph.
• Citations: Accurate but make sure in the same font as the body text.
• Research Objectives, Research Questions: Relevant to the research problem and matching to each other.
• References: Blogs not allowed. Referencing must be in APA style.
