INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 1

Week 6 (13/04/20)

In this project, we were to design a new McDonalds Happy meal box together with its fun fries packaging. The new design should include some sort of education information within the design.

To start off, I started brainstorming my ideas. Definitely, I would want my idea to be applicable and relevant to the current situation. Since its the pandemic of Covid-19, it is wise to increase awareness and educate kids about it. Kids should practice good hygiene and should understand the importance of it.

The purpose of my idea is to educate kids about the importance of washing hands and to demonstrate the correct way of washing hands to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

I begin with my process of sketching and drawing out my ideas. The initial idea was to have an explanation of how germs spread and pop out germs characters for kids to play with and to stick on the "hand" provided. The correct steps of washing hands will also be included as well as a page full of cut out materials that provide a simulation for kids to wash hands.

After Mr. Shamsul approved the idea, I proceeded to draw and colour the semi comp.

FEEDBACK

Week 6
Mr. Shamsul wants us to complete our semi comp by this week. For my idea and sketches, it is okay and for my french fries box, it should have continuity and just a simple message from the main packaging.

Week 7
Individual feedback: After showing Mr. Shamsul my semi comp, he said he liked one of the options. Well organized and easy for kids to understand. He also told me to keep my information on one side as it will be too cluttered, afraid that there will be too much information.

Week 8
Individual feedback: Mr. Shamsul liked the way that I have the happy meal logo on the box. And he mentioned that some elements on my design weren't necessary such as the raindrops and the tap because I already have a tap for the perforated section. I should also rework and refine my fun fries packaging.

Week 9
No class conducted today due to Public Holiday

REFLECTION

Experience
Week 6:  I came up with ideas for my happy meal box and since I wanted it to be in line with the current situation, my message was about to reduce the spread of Covid-19. Week 7: I had my ideas in mind and drew out the semi comp for it. I had a lot of educational information in mind to display it on the happy meal box but Mr. Shamsul said to reduce them as it might get too cluttered. Week 8: I started digitizing the happy meal box and fun fries in Illustrator.

Observation
Week 6: I observed that having to design a product for kids, a product as simple as the happy meal packaging, requires us to put ourselves in kids' shoes to understand how will they react and interact with the product. Week 7: Elements such as colour, typeface and illustrations has to be kid friendly and exciting enough for kids. Week 8: I noticed that it was really difficult for my classmates and I to look for a mock up for the happy meal packaging.

Findings
Week 6: I found that it was challenging to think of other messages that educates kids about the corona virus except to educate them about washing their hands and wearing their mask. Week 7: I found that having the dieline ready for the happy meal packaging helped me as I wouldn't know the right proportions for the actual size since I don't have the actual packaging with me.Week 8: I realized that I am not that good in determining which colour looks best on my designs, thus, I need help from Mr. Shamsul and my friends for help.
